The Rain Reef is a ceramic structure that connects to a downspout to collect and buffer rainwater. Due to the material's porosity the water is gradually distributed to the outside where it supports the growth of mosses and algae on its surface. When placed in soil it also moistures the surrounding earth.
Its complex geometry creates a diverse range of habitats. Their different orientations towards the sun, wind and rain results in a variety of conditions, increasing ecological potential.
As the rainwater evaporates, the Rain Reef also humidifies and cools its immediate surroundings. On a warm day, it can be up to six degrees cooler than a surrounding facade.
The Rain Reef is delivered with a connection piece for the downspout. Installation requires a drill.
The Rain Reef:
collects and buffers rainwater
cools naturally through evaporation
generates ecological potential
